1967- Mediterranean Sea

The first deployment of the Josephus Daniels was to the Mediterranean Sea in 1967, a deployment which included participation in various NATO exercises.  From May 27-31, 1968, the Josephus Daniels participated in the unsuccessful search for the ill-fated nuclear submarine, SCORPION (SSN-589).

1968- South America, UNITAS IX

In July of 1968, the Josephus Daniels began UNITAS IX, which included circumnavigation of South America and numerous exercises with various South American Navies.

1970- Western Pacific Ocean

Josephus Daniels began a western Pacific deployment on February 25, 1970.  Transiting the Panama Canal on March 4, 1970 and crossing the International Dateline on the 19th, the ship arrived in Vietnam, relieving the USS BELNAP (DLG-26) in the Gulf of Tonkin and assuming duties of South Search and Rescue Ship in Da Nang.  Josephus Daniels returned to Norfolk, Virginia after completing an extended 251 day deployment.

1971- Mediterranean Sea

The ship began her second MED cruise on July 6,1971 as flagship for Destroyer Squadron 26, returning on December 17, 1971.

1973- Mediterranean Sea

On June 2, 1973 JOSEPHUS DANIELS deployed again to the MED, participating in NATO Operation DEEP EXPRESS in the Mediterranean Sea and OCEAN SAFARI in the Artic Ocean.

1982- Indian Ocean

On January 5, 1982 the JOSEPHUS DANIELS left for an Indian Ocean deployment.  Enroute to Sicily, on January 23, 1982. a SH-3 Sea King helicopter, from HS-7 embarked in USS JOHN F. KENNEDY, hovering above the JOSEPHUS DANIELS flight deck transferring personnel, cargo, and mail, suddenly lost power and crashed into the fantail.  The helicopter was heavily damaged, but due to the quick reaction and professionalism of the ship's crew, only minor injuries to personnel resulted.  On May 14, 1982, during a visit from John F. Lehman Jr., Secretary of the Navy, the Helo Crash and Rescue team were congratulated for their superb efforts. 

JOSEPHUS  DANIELS transitted the Suez Canal on February 3, 1982 and in the course of the deployment was visited by the President of the Democratic Replublic of Somalia, Mohammed Siad Barre, and Miss Black America 1980, Pamela Jenkins.  The ship arrived home in July 1982
