Captain Z. L. Newcomb

Captain Zeanious L. Newcomb received his commission upon completion of the Aviation Officer Candidate Program in 1957. A graduate of Roanoke College he also received a Masters Degree in Operation Analysis at the United States Navy Post Graduated School, completed the Senior Officers Course at the Naval War College in Newport Rhode Island and graduated from the U.S. Naval Destroyer School.

His first assignment was with VP-44 as an aerial navigator and ASW evaluator, flying the P5M Marlin Seaplane. Following this tour he reported to Project Magnet, an airborne survey of the earth’s magnetic field. His primary billet was that of an aerial navigator in the R5D and WV-2 aircraft.

Duties at sea have been onboard USS Ranger (CV 61) as Assistant Navigator, Operations Officer in USS Fox (CG 33), Executive Officer in USS Jouett (CG 29) and as Commanding Officer of USS Joseph Hewes (FF 1078).

Captain Newcomb has served on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations and was a “plank owner” of the U.S. Naval Space Surveillance Command at Dahlgren, Virginia. His assignment prior to reporting to Josephus Daniels was at the Naval Surface Weapons Center where he served as Deputy Commander for Operation and Officer-in-Charge of the Dahlgren Site Dahlgren, Virginia.

Captain Newcomb is married to the former Ludwell Newman of Roanoke, Virginia. They have three children, twin daughters and a son.
